The Scottish Isle of Tiree to the Mountains of Antarctica
Hello, I am John MacArthur, Director, Highland Sustainability. What inspires me?
The Isle of Tiree
I have visited the Isle of Tiree since I was a boy, and climbed up the green hill in the photo with each generation of my family. I go there to see my family, who always give unconditional love. The island has white sandy beaches and diamond blue seas. Natural harmony flourishes, with wild flowers, rare birds, hares, seals and free grazing farm animals. Community and caring for one another matters. Tiree is an example of a sustainable, balanced way of life.
The Mountains of Antarctica
I took the snowy photo above when I visited Antarctica. I taught climate change and energy transition to entrepreneurs, scientists, educators, students, activists and business people among others. We were a group of many nationalities, demographics and diverse backgrounds and quickly became lifelong friends.
The pristine Antarctic with its abundant wildlife and natural beauty is the perfect setting to learn about the importance of sustainability. Our expedition leader, Rob Swan OBE, inspired us to tackle sustainability challenges, quote: "The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it."
And finally...
I have lived and worked globally, from Abu Dhabi to Amsterdam, Borneo to Cairo, and visited every continent. We all have shared sustainability purpose. Sustainability is our shared human, unconditional love for families, friends and neighbours. It is our joy of nature flourishing and biodiversity regeneration of our shared planetary home. We can create opportunity, equity and prosperity for all, which inspires and rewards. Sustainable prosperity's tide lifts all boats.
